(12-23-04 North to Fairbanks) This is the view looking out my windshield. What you see, faintly in front of me is a car. Everything is pure white, wind is blowing very hard directly into us.
Anchorage to Fairbanks Almost
Now you can not see the car in front of me. Travelling at about 10mph, snow is approximately 12-15" deep, roadway is completely covered with snow drifts.

Typical roadway in this area is asphalt Two-Lane (Wide lanes) highway. Oh, yeah forgot that is in the summer time.

Cars were getting stuck everywhere. It was a single path, everyone staying in the ruts, no real lanes to speak of.

Anchorage to Fairbanks 365 miles. Drove to mile 210 +/-. Arrived in Cantwell at about 3:45pm, this was the end of the road as the road North to Fairbanks was closed due to an avalanche.

Cantwell is a small community with a population of about 200 people. It has two gas stations, a couple of lodges - mostly summer tourist town, pretty much closed down in winter months. But, hey today it looked like a major shopping mall parking lots during Christmas shopping season. Business was booming for the locals.

Lot's of cars, trucks parked everywhere - no one going anywhere. All hotel/Motels filled, no rooms available. 7 degress above wind blowing 40-45 mph

After topping off the gas tank (2.43/gal) decided to follow a south bound road grader. He was blading a single lane south, towards Anchorage. Followed road grade for about 50 miles at 20-25 mph. Got to a point where two plow trucks from the south were clearing the road. What a day 418 miles travelled at an average speed of 32mph per GPS. No Fairbanks this year for Chrismas.
Bad Weather Posted by Hello Road (North bound) was finally reopened on @ 3:47pm 12-24-04
